Man Gets Robbed After Posting Ad at Craigslist

Lexinton police are investigating a robbery on a man who sold items on Craigslist Tuesday in Lexington, Kentucky. Police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts indicated that the robbery was the third or the fourth instance of a crime committed that was hatched through Craigslist where people usually post items for sale or trade anonymously.

About 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, police received a call from an apartment complex parking lot located on 3500 block Laredo Drive. The caller told police that he had posted on Craigs list some items for sale and had driven to Laredo Drive to meet with the buyer.

Upon arriving at the scene, the victim relates that two men pointed a gun at him and robbed him of several expensive items which include; an iPad tablet computer, an iPod MP3 player, the victim’s wallet and an iPhone. It is still unclear what items that the victim is planning to sell to the disguised buyers who turned out to be robbers.

Sherelle Roberts cautioned Craigslist sellers and buyers to only agree in meeting buyers in safe, well lit and busy places during daytime and avoid meeting in isolated places where no witnesses are around to help you in cases that it becomes a robbery instead of a simple buy and sell transaction.

“Don’t go to people’s homes or secluded areas,” Roberts said. “If someone is not willing to meet you in a public place … then you should not do business with that person.”

The World Wide Web can be a useful tool to trade items to other people, but it can also become a tool of criminals, that’s why extra caution is needed whenever someone deals with anonymous people online.

BBB Warns Public to Exercise Caution When Using Craigslit

The BBB or the Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota has warned the public to exercise caution when using Craigslist.org, an online personal ads service.

“There are certainly deals to be found online, but it’s good for both buyers and sellers to remember they’re usually dealing with people unfamiliar to them,” said BBB President and CEO Dana Badgerow. “There are risks involved and we feel it’s very important that people take the time to pause and consider both their personal and financial security.”

Craigslist has somehow become a source of good buys and deals for many people, just like in real life most Craigslist sellers and buyers are honest. However there are instances that it was being used by a few people to commit crimes by either duping, robbing or scamming online buyers or sellers alike.

The BBB has issued a few precautionary tips when using Craigslist:
– Deal first with local sellers and buyers
– Avoid wiring money
– Do not reveal your personal financial information and Social Security number
– Never apply for jobs that requires you to pay
– Home or apartment rentals should be checked in person before paying a down payment
– Strongly consider if it’s always worth selling an expensive item by comparing it with any profit you might make.

These are just some of the cautionary measures the BBB has advised those who are using Craigslist. While it will never deter those with intent on committing crimes online, it does lessen the chances of you getting scammed or fooled.

Jim Buckmaster a craigslist CEO attacked CNN’s Amber Lyon on blog post

Seems like Jim Buckmaster wasn’t happy with the way Amber Lyon interviewed their founder Craig Newmark. According to Jim Buckmaster Amber ambushed Craig with surprised questions about topics which Craig wasn’t prepared to answer. He was supposed to be interviewed for his talk on veteran’s affairs which happened last May 20.

Jim’s feisty post was created after Amber Lyon requested to set up an interview with the company’s spokesperson or Jim himself. Jim claimed that Craig though he is the founder his is no longer in management and he is not the company’s spokesperson. And that it was not fair to ambush their semi-retired founder Craig Newmark with questions he doesn’t have a clear idea or he hasn’t prepared for. What makes Jim so mad is that the network was able to air the “misleading” piece a number of times. The CEO has no problems with the network but he was only attacking Amber Lyon.

Flawless Women ad posted by Dove on Craigslist

Dove had been known for their campaign for Real beauty featuring real women with their real curves but their good image had been under threat when an ad for “Flawless Women” were posted on Craigslist purportedly by Dove. The ad seeks for women with flawless skin that is well groomed with nice bodies that are naturally fit and not too athletic or curvy. This is a bit too strict of a requirement from Dove and the ad had been scrutinized.

Dove’s spokesperson said that the casting notice hasn’t been approved by their team and they will take the necessary steps to prevent something like this from happening again. They appreciate that the ad was brought to their attention. The spokesperson also added that they believe that the images for Dove demonstrates that real beauty comes in different shapes, color and size as well as age and they remain with their commitment to keep this image in all of their advertising.

A media commentator also said that since the ad was written in almost all caps with exclamation marks, which is quite inappropriate and unprofessional, shouldn’t have been taken seriously.

Elusive dog tracked down thanks to Craigslist

Linda McDowell doesn’t know where to start looking for her 5 year old dog named Bo. He ran away when he got treated in a veterinary hospital after he was bitten by a pit bull. For some reason, he just bolted out of there and this devastated Linda.

She started putting up fliers around the clinic but had no luck, she even posted an ad on Craigslist on its lost and found section but didn’t have much luck until a woman named April Daily saw the dog as her own dog started barking so she looked out the window and saw this cute dog. He hides a lot so they couldn’t catch him and they couldn’t check his name tag.

They tried searching for lost dogs on Craigslist but thought there was no listing until at the last moment, there it was a picture of Bo. Her husband Shane started crying out this is the dog as it looks exactly like the dog that was hiding on the bushes. They immediately called up Linda and she went to their house and camped out waiting for Bo. Bo didn’t come back so she’s still looking for her dog who she said is totally devoted to her. The Daily family lives in Stetson Hills so he might be just near the area. Email Linda if you find him at [email protected]

Trial Postponed

Our trial before the Delaware Chancery Court has just been postponed at eBay’s request, but it’s worth noting that the Chancellor has now granted summary judgement dismissing 2 of eBay’s claims.

As to the remaining claims, the evidence at trial will show craigslist and its directors adopted reasonable governance measures to protect craigslist and its mission from, among other things, eBay’s exploitation of its position as stockholder to harm craigslist and obtain unfair commercial advantage.

Here is the public version of craigslist’s trial brief.

The unrelated suit against eBay in California — for unlawful and unfair competition, misappropriation of proprietary information, deceptive passing-off, business interference, false advertising, phishing attacks, free-riding, trademark infringement, trademark dilution, and breaches of fiduciary duty — is unaffected.

DIY Moving Sucks

Congratulations! You just landed that killer deal on craigslist – a sweet, deluxe pool table that fits perfectly in the rec room.  But that thing is not only heavy, it’s delicate.  We’re not just talking bend-your-knees heavy; we’re talkin’ hernia heavy.  So what do you do?

As craigslist continues to rock the local classifieds market, our little pool table scenario is becoming more and more common.  And believe it or not, a bunch of beefy guys in weight belts who know a thing or two about leverage may just save the day.

Local moving companies are reaping the rewards of the public’s greater comfort in buying oversized, awkward and hard-to-move stuff online and locally.  And sometimes, throwing it in the back of your brother-in-law’s F150 just won’t cut it.  Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great guy and all…

So how do you find good local and/or specialized mover and do so without getting ripped off?

Give sites like uShip.com and craigslistdelivery.com a try if you want to save your back and marriage/life partnership/whathaveyou.  uShip helps you easily connect with movers – in this case, local guys – who are feedback-rated (a la eBay).  Once you list something you need moved, they actually place competing bids to win your business (again, think eBay, but the price goes lower), so this helps you move your beast of bargain at a reasonable price.

So finding deals on craigslist can be really fun and exciting – and it usually is.  But sometimes that heavy, awkward or delicate dream buy can quickly turn into a nightmare if you try to save a buck on transport.  Invest in the peace of mind – your back will thank you for it.
